New electronic music competition judged by Bicep

This competition is now closed.

We've partnered with Charanga to launch a new electronic music competition to find some of the best electronic dance music tracks produced on VIP Studio Sessions.

VIP Studio Sessions is an online learning and music production platform that provides an array of different tools for young people to produce digital music as part of projects, and independently. Their online recording studio and resources support them across song-writing, beat-making, recording, mixing, releasing and the promotion of their music.

Thanks to a new partnership with Charanga, we have been able to give organisations we fund, and the young people they support, access to VIP Studio Sessions.

About the competition

The competition brief is broad, and electronic dance music can of course mean different things to different people. Entered tracks could be anything from Drum and Bass to House, Dubstep, Electro – and everything in between.

Who can enter

This competition is open to anyone aged 11-25 using VIP, whether you’re just starting out with creating your own digital music or already have electronic production experience.

Tracks created on other platforms (e.g. Logic Pro X or Ableton) are also eligible for the competition - they just have to be uploaded onto VIP and submitted.

When is the deadline?

The deadline to enter is Monday 31 August 2020.

About the judges

The competition will be judged by critically acclaimed electronic music duo, and Youth Music Ambassadors, Bicep.

Bicep will be selecting their top three tracks entered by Youth Music funded organisations, as well as their top track submitted by other young people from the wider VIP community.

Interview with Bicep

In an interview with Natasha Moore (as part of Youth Music Next Gen) Bicep offered some invaluable advice and insights into electronic music production and how they developed careers as musicians. Read the interview online.

How to enter

Once set up with a licence, submitting tracks to the competition is easy: create the track on VIP (or upload one that’s been created elsewhere) and click on the ‘Send Us Your Tracks’ link.

To create or upload tracks and enter them to the competition a VIP login is required. Organisations funded by Youth Music can request a licence here. If you are taking part in a Youth Music funded project you can request a VIP license by speaking directly to your organisation contact.

Once set up (which takes 3-5 days after licence request) organisations can then create user accounts on VIP for the young people they work with.

What’s the prize?

Competition winners and runners-up will receive a contribution from Youth Music towards music-making costs. This could include purchasing new equipment and software, booking studio time, or promoting a new track or album. More information about these prizes will be announced soon.

About the Charanga and Youth Music partnership

This competition marks the launch of Youth Music and Charanga’s VIP partnership. As part of this collaboration Youth Music is offering fully subsidised VIP licences to grantholders, enabling the young people and organisations we support to learn new skills, produce music, and deliver music-making activities on VIP.

We hope that VIP will evolve into an online community of music-making for the young people, music leaders and organisations we support. Our aim is for the platform to facilitate further practice sharing across our network and serve as a place where young people can create and communicate their work.

Can I sign up to VIP studio sessions?

Youth Music is offering fully subsidised VIP licences to current grantholders for the duration of their project. Once an organisation has been set up on the platform, they are able to create user accounts for project participants directly through VIP.

If you would like to apply for VIP Studio licences, please complete the application form online. If you would like to discuss whether VIP Studios would be the right thing for your organisation, or if you have any other questions, please contact sam.scott@youthmusic.org.uk
