We have been absolutely blown away by the incredible support for our 'Rescue the Roots' campaign, a £1 million fundraising effort to protect the future of the grassroots youth music sector.

Every pound raised will be matched by us, until a total of £2 million is quickly distributed to youth organisations and emerging young creatives. This will provide crucial support for over 18,000 young people in 2025.

One month post-launch and we're a quarter of the way towards our goal. To celebrate, we hosted an industry launch event at The Lower Third in London, hosted by BBC Introducing Presenter, Abbie McCarthy.

The event kicked off with our 'Rescue the Roots' campaign launch video, featuring Rizzle Kicks star, author, and Youth Music Awards 2024 Grassroots Hero Award recipient, Jordan Stephens.

Our CEO, Matt Griffiths then spoke powerfully about the crisis facing grassroots youth music, and some of the incredible projects we support that are making a difference every day.

A silence fell as the crowd watched our 'Rescue the Roots' documentary, produced by Tell Studio and starring ALT BLK ERA's Nyrobi, Jack Drum Arts participant, Leah, and Surrey Arts participant, Grandi. Shining a light on the lived experiences of the three young people, the short film illustrates the transformative power of music on each of their lives.

The panel saw Youth Music NextGen Fund artist Nyrobi (one half of sister duo ALT BLK ERA), Youth Music donor, Adam Brown, and Jack Drum Arts' Managing Director, Helen Brown, come together to discuss the crisis facing grasroots youth music.

Each sharing their lived experiences as music lovers, music makers, and music facilitators, find out what the panel, led by Abbie, had to say...

Unlocking Dreams with Grassroots Funding

Grassroots funding can transform the music industries by providing opportunities for young artists who might otherwise be overlooked. This support can lead to a more diverse and vibrant music scene, filled with unique voices and styles.

Creating Inclusive Spaces for All

Grassroots music spaces offer a safe haven for young people, including those from the LGBTQI+ community, to express themselves and grow creatively. These spaces foster a sense of belonging and support, helping individuals to build confidence and pursue their passions.

The Power of Community Support

Community organisations like Jack Drum Arts play a crucial role in nurturing young talent. By providing resources and mentorship, they help young musicians overcome barriers and develop their skills, leading to personal and professional growth.

The Struggle for Sustainable Funding

Grassroots music organizations often face challenges in securing consistent funding. Without adequate support, music education and opportunities may become exclusive to the privileged, limiting the diversity of voices in the industry.

Role Models and Mentorship

Having relatable role models is essential for young musicians. Seeing someone who has walked a similar path can inspire them to pursue their dreams and believe in their potential.

The Joy of Music

Music has the power to bring joy and happiness, even in difficult times. Grassroots music spaces provide a platform for young people to experience the emotional and social benefits of music, fostering a positive and supportive environment.

After the panel, food from our partner Wingstop arrived, along with vegan and vegetarian pizzas, to fuel our guests for the next portion of the evening.

Attendees were then treated two performances by Youth Music NextGen Fund artists, TEEDEMBA and Livvy K, who were both selected as part of our Ones to Watch: 25 for 2025 list.

Coventry-hailing artist TEEDEMBA owned the stage with his impactful delivery and slick vocals, while Manchester's Livvy K gave her all with tracks from her debut EP, Finally Free, Finally Me.

Collaborative Efforts for a Thriving Scene

For grassroots music to thrive, collaboration between schools, community organisations, the music industry, and government is essential. Working together can ensure that music remains a vibrant and accessible part of our culture.

Practical Actions to Support Grassroots Music

Individuals can support grassroots music by donating, volunteering, and engaging with local music projects. Every bit of support helps to sustain these vital spaces and the young talent they nurture.

At the event, our 'Rescue the Roots' protest t-shirts, designed exclusively by Anthony Burrill, were available to purchase, with all proceeds contributing to the campaign, and taking direct action to protect grassroots youth music spaces. Sign up to pre-order your t-shirt here!
