Our first NextGen Community event of 2025 headed to Leeds for an evening of expert insights, live performances and networking.

Taking place at Leeds hotspot, Hyde Park Book Club, local label pros gathered for our panel on the role of record labels in today's music industry.

Hosted by our NextGen Community Producer, Talia Andrea, the panel featured Claire Hamilton, Coordinator at Launchpad+, Danny West, Producer at Universal Production Music, and Jilly Chatten, Senior Programme Manager at Come Play With Me.

After the discussion, Youth Music NextGen Fund artist Claudia Fenoglio gave a spellbinding performance, followed by our first ever NextGen Community open mic. Event attendees signed up for a slot on the door when they arrived, each taking to the stage to showcase their original music.

Didn't make it down? Here's what the experts had to say...

Understanding Record Labels

Record labels, whether major or independent, play a crucial role in releasing music, supporting artists, and managing campaigns. Major labels have extensive global networks and resources, while independent labels often provide more personalised support and closer relationships with artists.

Differences Between Major and Independent Labels

Major labels offer significant investment and global connections but come with higher financial burdens and less personal relationships. Independent labels, on the other hand, provide more intimate support and flexibility, often fostering deeper connections with artists.

Benefits of Signing to a Label vs. Staying Independent

Signing to a label can provide marketing support, financial investment, and industry connections. However, staying independent allows artists to retain control over their music and image, and avoid accruing debt. The panel emphasised that there is no single path to success in the music industry.

Impact of Social Media on the Music Industry

Social media has drastically changed the music landscape, offering artists direct access to their audience. However, it also creates pressure to achieve viral moments, which can be unpredictable and stressful. The panellists advised using social media sustainably and focusing on building genuine connections with fans.

What Labels Look for in Artists

Labels seek artists who are proactive, hardworking, and capable of managing their careers independently. Demonstrating the ability to release music effectively, build a fanbase, and maintain a strong work ethic are key factors that attract label interest.

Challenges and Opportunities in the Music Industry

The panel discussed the financial challenges faced by artists, especially those starting out. They highlighted the importance of understanding royalties, exploring alternative income streams like sync deals, and leveraging local support networks.

Future of Record Labels

The future of record labels involves adapting to changes in the industry, such as the rise of independent artists and the evolving role of social media. The panellists expressed optimism about the potential for new models that support sustainable music careers.

Advice for Aspiring Music Industry Professionals

For those looking to work in the music industry, the panel emphasised the importance of being adaptable, asking questions, and gaining a broad understanding of the industry. Building relationships, attending events, and being proactive in seeking opportunities were also highlighted as crucial steps.

As part of our mission to support emerging creatives UK-wide, our NextGen Community Series has headed to Cardiff, Bristol, Manchester and Glasgow, providing networking opportunities as well as opening the doors to some of the music industry's key organisations, such as MetaKISS FM and Levi's at their offices in London.

Not only have these events given young creatives the chance to connect, but they have also provided knowledge sharing opportunities from trailblazers and industry leaders, sharing tips and tricks about everything from building communities to brand collaborations and leveraging social media platforms as a music industry creative.
