Kent Album Project: Amplifying Young Voices

The Kent Album Project, led by Square Pegs Arts, set out to capture the spirit of Kent and Medway through the voices and talents of young autistic, learning-disabled, and neurodivergent individuals.

The innovative idea behind the project was to create an album with original songs representing each of the 13 districts of Kent and Medway. These songs were written and recorded by young people from each area, celebrating both their local communities and their personal journeys.

To bring this vision to life, Square Pegs Arts, supported by the Catalyser Fund, assembled diverse groups of young people, each with unique abilities and backgrounds, drawn from various schools, groups, and organisations. These groups participated in songwriting workshops, drawing inspiration from their local surroundings to craft lyrics and melodies. "The participants were tasked with writing songs that not only represented each district of Kent and Medway but also their own perspectives as autistic, learning-disabled, or neurodivergent young people from those areas," explained Paul from Square Pegs Arts. Working alongside top producers and session musicians, the young artists recorded their compositions in some of the county's best studios, ensuring the songs were crafted to professional standards.

The experience of being in a professional recording studio was a highlight for many participants. "It was certainly a highlight for many of the participants who had never had such an opportunity—some of them described it as a ‘dream come true’," Paul shared. For many, stepping into a professional recording environment and collaborating with seasoned musicians was a dream come true, an experience that excited everyone involved. The atmosphere was electric, with participants eager to rise to the occasion. This immersive experience not only validated their creative ideas but also provided a significant confidence boost. Hearing their songs professionally produced and played back for the first time was a moment of realisation and pride for each young artist.

Central to the project was Square Pegs Arts' philosophy of focusing on abilities rather than disabilities. "At the centre of this project, as with all the projects we do at Square Pegs Arts, is the notion of celebrating the abilities of our young participants rather than focusing on their disabilities," Paul emphasised. Through creative sessions, participants explored their identities and experiences, gaining insights not only into their local areas but also into themselves. Many discovered new talents, surprising themselves and others with their songwriting and musical abilities.

The Kent Album Project's success extended beyond the recording studio. "The fact that the songs are commercially available via iTunes, Spotify, YouTube and all of the other streaming platforms, and that they have since been played at events has been a huge confidence boost," Paul noted. 

The project has had lasting impacts on its participants. Feedback collected by external evaluators highlighted how the experience has inspired many to continue writing, recording, and engaging in musical activities. The project has not only enhanced their belief in their abilities but has also opened doors to new opportunities. "For many, the process has given them a sense of belief in themselves and opened up doors to things they never thought possible," Paul said.

There were many standout moments throughout the project, but some were particularly memorable. For instance, a participant who initially felt too anxious to sing ended up delivering a powerful performance, much to the amazement of his parents and peers. Another participant, who was content to watch from the sidelines, unexpectedly contributed a perfect vocal hook that became a central element of the song.

The project culminated in a launch event, organised by five Young Ambassadors, where participants from across the county came together to celebrate their achievements. The event featured a silent disco, where participants sang along to each other’s songs, creating a powerful sense of community and shared accomplishment. "The launch event was, in all honesty, the most impactful event I’ve ever been to," Paul shared. "There were lots of emotional tears and an overwhelming sense of something special having been achieved by these young people."

The Kent Album Project stands as a testament to the power of creativity and collaboration, showcasing the remarkable talents of young people and leaving a lasting legacy that will inspire for years to come.
