CASE STUDY: MEDUULLA

Hailing from Manchester, Meduulla is a 24-year-old Zimbabwe born rapper and poet.

Thanks to the Youth Music NextGen Fund, Meduulla was able to fund the creation of her debut album ‘Oblongata’, which released last November. The record draws from her personal journal writings: “I let the beat lead me somewhere and try to have no filter when I write. Then I revisit what I've written and try and make it musical.”

Her creative passions aren’t new however, with her first freestyle in 2015 gaining recognition from Wiley. More recently, she appeared on season 3 of the BBC’s The Rap Game UK and was selected as BBC 1Xtra’s track of the week.

She has been featured in coverage by DJ Mag, Happy Magazine, ITVX, and has plans to follow the EP with more music releases. Meduulla also wrote and featured in the powerful spoken word piece for the Youth Music Awards 2023 introduction film, Take Note.

Speaking about the impact the NextGen Fund had on her, Meduulla said, “I have collaborated with 7 people on the creation of the songs alone, thus, I have learned how to work together with other artists and support each other where we can. Additionally, I have been given the confidence to apply for more grants and opportunities to develop my practice thanks to my successful application with Youth Music.”
